Foreign investors are scrambling to hedge losses as the S&P 500’s 6% decline in 2024 balloons to 14% when converted to euros or yen. The dollar’s slide has turned a once-reliable strategy—buying US stocks and dollars for outsized returns—into a source of mounting losses. State Street data reveals most international holders of US equities remain dangerously under-hedged against currency swings.

Market veterans note the reversal is particularly jarring after years of dollar dominance. The Trump administration’s policy volatility has further eroded confidence in what was considered the ultimate SAFE haven. Notably absent from the hedging rush: cryptocurrency allocations, despite Bitcoin’s traditional role as a macro hedge.
